Beginner Bag Making - Feb 24 & 26
Title: Holland Pouch
Skill Level: Beginner
Class Description: This course introduces bagmaking. We will be making the Holland Pouch by Center Street Quilts. The pouch can be made in 3 different sizes and for this class I recommend either the medium or large version. The list of materials below is for the large pouch; the list also works for the medium.
Materials:
(these materials work for the large or medium pouch)
Holland Pouch Pattern by Center Street Quilts |

Main Fabric |
Fat Quarter* |
Lining Fabric |
Fat Quarter |
Accent Fabric |
Fat Quarter** |
Foam Stabilizer (such as Bosal In-R-Foam or by Annie Soft and Stable) |
17” x 21” |
Fusible Interfacing (such as Pellon SF101) |
10” x 10” piece |
Zipper |
20” or longer*** |
Coordinating thread |
|
*If you are choosing a directional print for your Main Fabric, you may need more than 1 Fat Quarter; I recommend bringing 2 FQs or ½ yard.
*** I recommend #5 zipper/zipper tape for this pouch and the byAnnie 24" zipper sold in the shop is perfect. Nylon coil is easy to sew and cut. I do not recommend using separating (used on a jacket) or metal zippers for this pouch.
The Class is split into two 2 ½ hour sessions.
Session One: During the first class you will press and cut your fabrics and learn how to machine quilt the Main Fabric, Foam, Lining Fabric together. It is okay if you have never done this before. ???? You will also make the Handles and Bindings.
Session Two: During the second class you will learn how to add the zipper bindings and zipper, sew the bag together, box the corners, and finish the ends with binding.
Additional items to bring to class
-
Sewing machine. You should be familiar with how your machine works including how to wind and load the bobbin, change the sewing feet, and thread the needle. Don’t forget the cord and pedal.
-
Ruler, rotary cutter, marking tool, pins, clips, extra needle(s), scissors
-
Sewing Feet. If you have a walking foot, it will make quilting the Main Fabric, Foam, Lining Fabric easier. It is okay if you do not have a walking foot, you can use other feet for this step such as a ¼” or straight stich foot.
-
Zipper Foot. Definitely bring your zipper foot. This foot typically comes with your machine. It will make a big difference to have this when you are attaching the zipper. It will look similar to the images below.
