BM201: Redwood Tote - Oct 21 & 23

Title: Intermediate Bag Making

Class Description: This course continues the bag making journey

Pre-requisite: You have made bag(s) in either an intro to bag making class or on your own.

Pattern: Redwood Tote by Noodlehead

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner/Intermediate

Approx. Finished Dimensions: 10 ½” wide (measured at base), 2 ½” deep, 13” tall

Materials needed:

Requirements based on 44”-wide fabric. Fat quarter = 18” tall x 21” wide
Pellon SF101 is 20” wide

  • 1/2 yard Exterior Fabric (canvas 7-9oz. weight or quilting cotton)

  • 1/3 yard Accent Fabric (includes Reinforced Base, Handles, and Strap) (quilting cotton)

  • 1 yard (¾ yard if using non-directional fabric) Lining Fabric (quilting cotton)

  • yards Fusible Woven Interfacing (Pellon SF101 – 20”wide)

  • ½ yard Fusible Fleece* (Pellon 987F – this is fusible on 1 side only – the 2-sided fusible will not work) If using 20" you will need 1 yard.

  • (1) 6” zipper* for front pocket

  • (1) 12” zipper for top closure

  • (2) 1”-wide triangle or d-rings, (2) 1”-wide swivel clasps AND (1) 1”-wide strap slider

  • 2” x 11” piece of heavyweight interfacing for Reinforced Base

* Fusible Fleece is not in the pattern materials list but my addition. I love this tote the best when made with fusible fleece and SF101 instead of only SF101.

ZIPPER NOTE: this pattern is written for fixed-length zippers (if using zipper by the yard please add 1.5" to the length of each designated zipper)

The Class is 2 evenings for 3 hours each.

Before Class: All fabrics cut in preparation for the first night of class.  It will take approximately 1 - 2 hours to cut fabric for this class so please plan accordingly.  We will not have time during the in-person class for cutting fabrics.

Additional items to bring to class

  1. Sewing machine.  You should be familiar with how your machine works including how to wind and load the bobbin, change the sewing feet, and thread the needle.  Don’t forget the cord and pedal.

  1. Ruler, rotary cutter, marking tool, pins, clips, extra needle(s), scissors

  1. Walking foot. If you have a walking foot, it will help sew through multiple fabric layers. It is okay if you do not have a walking foot, you can use other feet for this step such as a ¼” or straight stich foot.

  1. Zipper Foot.  Definitely bring your zipper foot.  This foot typically comes with your machine.  It will make a big difference to have this when you are attaching the zipper.
